CLEARFIELD – The Bison wrestling team won 8 of 9 contested matches and easily dispatched the Bradford Owls Tuesday night.
Clearfield got falls from Richie Queen in 0:39, Derek Danver in 5:27, Shawn Hall in 1:12, Lee Zalno in 1:43, and Andre Buck in 1:29. Holden Lowe won by technical fall, 18-2, in 5:00.
Andrew Hill, Shane Harper, Will Beauseigneur, Sean Owen, and Kodie Lowder all won by forfeit.
Andrew Spicer got his first win of the year at 112 lbs, earning a major decision with an 11-1 win over Gage Bunker, and Max VonGunden closed the match out by defeating Justin Yohe 13-2.
Bradford got its only points of the night at 152 lbs, when freshman sensation Mark Havers earned a major decision over Kasey Casher, 11-2.
Clearfield head coach Jeff Aveni was obviously pleased with the outcome, noting that Bradford was “inexperienced, and had some guys out, they didn’t have the guns to compete with us…still, we went out and took care of business”.
Coach Aveni singled out some wrestlers for praise. He praised Derek Danver for staying aggressive, and commenting that it was a “real good match for Derek”. He also had praise for Kasey Casher in defeat, noting the tough competition Casher has faced, “and then tonight he had to face a kid who won [Junior Olympics] last season, and he went toe-to toe with him. Havers is great, Casey has wrestled great competition, and he’s closing the gap on them”.
Clearfield faces a tough slate next week, traveling to Punxsutawney Tuesday night, then hosting nemesis Bald Eagle Area Thursday. Coach Aveni described both bouts as “scraps…we’ll need to bring our ‘A’ game to both to win.” Clearfield has not beaten BEA since 1986; conversely, as far as anyone can recall Punxsy has never beaten Clearfield. Both matches are set to begin at 7PM.
