Dubai, UAE (CNS) - The recent $20-million grand opening gala at the Atlantis Dubai on Palm Jumeirah has been met with mixed reviews.
The gala included a performance by Kylie Minogue and stars in attendance included Michael Jordan, Lindsay Lohan, Wesley Snipes, Mary Kate Olsen, Shirley Bassey and Mischa Barton.
AHN's Celebrity News Service has learned that although the resort has been open for a while, the press hasn't been great due to alleged bad service and structural problems.
The grand opening gala was a chance to put all of that behind the resort and generate some good publicity for the $1.5-billion resort.
Reports so far haven't been good, however, but instead have criticized the resort for its over-the-top display of wealth and extravagance in the midst of a global economic crisis.
Reports are also still saying that the rare whale-shark captured by the hotel in the Gulf and being held at the 113-acre resort - called Sammy the Shark - hasn't been released yet.
Environmental activists are saying the shark is a hostage and needs to be released.
