The Dow added 2 percent to end the day at 10,006 after moving as high as 10,011.93.

The Nasdaq swelled 50 points, or 2.4 percent, to 2,105.32. The financial, industrial, technology and consumer discretionary sectors of the gauge all rose more than 2 percent.

The Standard and Poor's 500 Index rose 20 points, or 1.9 percent, to 1,066.63.
