New York, NY (CNS) - Rapper Remy Ma has been sentenced to spend eight years in jail Tuesday, the New York Supreme Court decided.
26-year-old Reminisce Smith, the "Lean Back" singer's real name, was found guilty of assault, weapon possession, and attempted coercion in connection. The charges stemmed from the July shooting incident, in which the rapper wounded Makeda Barnes-Joseph outside a Manhattan nightclub.
The Associated Press reports that Remy Ma was emotional when the decision was read. She plans to appeal the decision, claiming the shooting was an accident.
In a related news, her in-jail wedding to fiancé Papoose was called off after he was found in possession of a handcuff key and was banned from the facility for six months.
