Copenhagen, Denmark (AHN) - Kyle Bennett of the Untied States became the first Olympic qualifier in the BMX event.
The three-time world champion bagged the first slot in the three-member U.S. Olympic BMX team headed for Beijing this summer, after making the finals Saturday at the World Cup race in Denmark. Bennett's finish automatically landed him an Olympic berth following the USA Cycling year-long competition points.
The U.S. squad needs to compete in the coming Olympic trials on June 14 for the second slot, while the third and final slot will depend on the coach's discretion.
The BMX event is one of the sports that will make its debut in the Summer Games in August.
Bennett, also known as "Butter" for his smooth style in riding, started his professional career in 2000. He is the stepson of BMX pro racer John Purse. The father and son riding team has won numerous titles and is considered technically as the only father-son team to win racing titles in BMX, professional or amateur.
