Longyan, China (AHN) - More than 200 torchbearers of the Olympics flame relay helped raise money on Wednesday to aid earthquake-hit victims in Sichuan province.
The relay crossed Fujian's five cities, including the capital Fuzhou. In the relay's final stop at Longyan, torchbearers led by Li Xinyan called out for relief donations to the thousands of victims affected by the 7.8-magnitude quake.
"As a torchbearer, I hope to show affection to the people in the earthquake-hit areas, and try to do something to help those affected by the disaster," Li, who donated 5 million yuan, told Xinhuanet.
Athletes, businessmen, teachers and students also took part in giving aid to the victims of the quake, which killed at least 10,000 people in the southwestern province of Sichuan. Thousands more could be buried under debris.
The relay started its China swing nearly two weeks ago in Hainan province and concludes Aug. 6 in Beijing. After a three-day leg in Fujian, the flame will be carried through Jiangxi province for the next three days.
