San Francisco, CA (AHN) - Barry Bonds was indicted on 14 counts of perjury and one count of obstruction as prosecutors on Tuesday reworked the case on the heels of a judge's order more than two months ago.
The prosecutors acted on the call from U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, who ordered that the five original charges-four on perjury and one on obstruction-be broken into several counts, with each lie representing one charge.
The revised indictment on Bonds centered on the same allegations-that he knowingly denied using performance-enhancing drugs while playing baseball for the San Francisco Giants. The all-time homerun leader told a federal grand jury in December 2003 that personal trainer Greg Anderson has never gave him any banned substance.
The 43-year-old slugger, who has pleaded not guilty to the perjury charges, will appear in court to face the revised indictment on June 6.
He remains unsigned this season as none of the 30 major league teams wanted to hire his services.
