Dayton, Ohio (AHN) - It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye, the old saying goes.
In a Dragons vs. Chiefs minor league game yesterday, someone nearly did as violence escalated between the teams, culminating when Chiefs Julio Castillo hurled a ball toward the Dragons' dugout, and hit a Dayton fan instead.
The injured fan was rushed to a nearby local hospital, though his current condition and name were not disclosed by hospital staff.
It got ugly real fast after that. Left fielder Brandon Menchaca threw himself at Castillo's back, and a big brawl occurred down the third base line.
The brawl would ensue for 10 minutes, resulting in the umpires ejecting 15 players, as well as the team's managers, and the game would be delayed for an hour after.
It started when Castillo beaned Dayton shortstop Zachary Kozart and Kozart left the game.
Then, Angel Cabrera, who had been a hero the night before, leading the Dragons to victory, was hit shortly after. He was then grounded into a force play at second, but slid real hard into the base.
Interim Chiefs Manager Carmelo Martinez came out of the dugout and had an argument with Dayton third-base coach, Donnie Scott.
The situation got nasty when Castillo hurled the ball that would strike the fan.
"Tonight's on-field incident between the field staffs of the Dayton Dragons and Peoria Chiefs was unfortunate and we sincerely wish that it would have not happened," Dayton GM Gary Mayse said in an issued statement.
"We are confident that the footage of tonight's incident will be reviewed by Midwest League President George Spelius and appropriate actions will be taken," he added.
Castillo faces criminal charges for his behavior and is expected to be arraigned on Friday. He has been charged with felonious assault.
