New York, NY (AHN) - Carole Caldwell Graebner, who won numerous tennis titles as a doubles player in the 1960's, passed away Wednesday in New York City after succumbing to cancer. She was 65.
Graebner battled cancer for a brief period, according to her daughter Cameron Graebner Mark. She is also survived by her son Clark Edward Graebner Jr. and four grandchildren.
Graebner won doubles titles in the 1965 U.S. Championships, which later became the U.S. Open.
The following year, she also won the doubles titles in the Australian Championships, now known as the Australian Open.
In both victories, Graebner partnered with Nancy Richey.
A former no. 1 doubles player in the U.S. in 1963, Graebner took the doubles titles in the 1965 and 1966 U.S. Clay Court Championships.
She was also a college teammate of Billie Jean King at Los Angeles' California State University.
Later on in her career, Graebner became chair of the Fed Cup committee in the U.S. Tennis Association.
She also was a radio and television commentator and served as vice president of Tennis Week magazine.
