Boston, MA (AHN) - The Red Sox have made a flurry of decisions these past few days and even reversed a few. Originally declining options for Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek, Martinez has since returned and been named starter.
"We're going to really look for Victor to be an everyday catcher for us next year," Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein told reporters during a visit to Chicago. "We feel like that puts us in the best position to win with Victor catching as much as he can."
Varitek, a Red Sox legend, has caught more games than any Red Sox player in history - and his fate is not entirely up to the franchise.
While resigned to being a back-up this next season, he still has a player option he can exercise worth up to $3 million. If he doesn't, he will be released as a free agent.
Martinez was picked up in a trade with the Indians back in July, and has done very well both beside the plate and behind it.
"The other spot we'll have available is for more of a traditional backup," Epstein said. "We'll see what Tek's decision is before we move forward."
