Regulators Find Florida Nuclear Plant Safe Despite Sleeping Guards

Windsor Genova - AHN News Writer

Turkey Point, FL (AHN) - The chief of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Tuesday declared a Florida nuclear plant, whose guards were caught sleeping on duty, safe and secure after personally inspecting the facility.

Local10.com quoted NRC chairman Dale Klein as saying, "The plant is safe. It is secure."

Klein's inspection of Florida Power & Light's Turkey Point nuclear plant was prompted by reports that its safety and security were suspect after the NRC found guards of the facility sleeping on duty on various occasions from 2004 to 2006.

The incidents, which violated NRC regulations, prompted the federal agency to fine FPL $130,000, which the plant operator has yet to pay or dispute pending its review of the violation report.
