Genentech Mulls Large-Scale Commercial Use Of Cancer Drug Avastin

New York, NY (AHN) - A medical drug that could prolong the life of cancer patients is undergoing tests for large-scale commercial use/

Avastin or bevacizumab, which is used to treat breast, colon and lung cancers by stopping blood supply to tumors, is being tested in 450 clinical experiments involving 30 types of cancers.

The drug, which could cost a patient as much as $100,000 a year, have less and serious side effects; could add a few more months and improve the patient's quality of life.

Manufactured by Genentech, Avastin was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treatment of advanced lung, colon or breast cancer.
