Canadians Planning To Cross U.S. Border Have 13 Days To Secure Passport

AHN Staff

Ottawa, Ontario (AHN) - Passport Canada warned Canadians who plan to cross the U.S. border by land or water they have 13 days to apply for a passport.

Beginning June 1, 2009, a passport will be required as travel documents for Canadian citizens 16 years and older to enter the U.S.

Aside from a valid passport, Canadians must also show border guards a NEXUS or Fast and Secure Trade card or an enhanced driver's license.

The U.S. requirement for passport to enter the United States actually took effect January 2007. However, it only applied then to Canadian travelers coming into the U.S. by plane.

Because of the June 1 deadline, Passport Canada expects to issue 5.1 million passports this year and next year.
