Siddique Islam - AHN South Asia Correspondent

Colombo, Sri Lanka (AHN) - At least 29 Tamil Tiger rebels and three security personnel were killed in fierce clashes in the country's restive northern region, officials said on Saturday.

"Air force fighter jet planes pounded on a place deployed with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) artillery at Nedunkerni North in Mulaithivu today," air force officials say in a statement.

Pilots confirmed that the air strike was successful and that they had observed several explosions in the location caused by the blasting of artillery Ammo storages, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported quoting the statement.

The rebels have been battling for an independent homeland since 1972 in an ethnic conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
