Yangon, Myanmar (AHN) - Red Cross first boat carrying relief good for Myanmar cyclone victims sank on Sunday after hitting debris in the Irrawaddy Delta region, according to the international agency.
Myanmar is also known as Burma.
"This is a great loss for the Myanmar Red Cross and for the people who need aid so urgently", Aung Kyaw Htut, who leads the Myanmar Red Cross distribution team, was quoted saying by The Associated Press news agency.
"This would have been our very first river shipment and it will delay aid for a further day."
The boat was traveling from the capital city of Yangon to Mawlamyinegyun in the Irrawaddy Delta where it was suppose to drop off supplies for the survivors before it was hit by a submerged tree trunk.
The delta was thrashed by 120 miles and hour powerful winds, surging 15 feet high. While the survivors are at risk from malaria and dengue fever.
"There is something that is wonderful and almost frightening, the behavior of the people," Pizzey, an eyewitness told CBS News.
"They are rebuilding now, they don't deal with the dead, they don't deal with the past, they are not looking for help from anybody."
Meanwhile, No one was injured in the boat incident, according to the aid organization.
The boat carrying around 100 bags of rice, 5,000 thousand liters of drinking water, 10,000 water purification tablets, 200 water storage containers, 10 stretchers, 30 boxes of clothing and household items like soap.
"Apart from the delay in getting aid to people we may now have to re-evaluate how we transport that aid," the organization's disaster manager in Yangon, Michael Annear, was quoted saying by The Gazette.
