New York, NY (AHN) - The UN Development Program (UNEP) and the World Agroforestry Centre on Tuesday announced they will increase the target of their joint global tree-planting drive to 7 billion trees.
The target, aimed to be achieved next year, is equivalent to one tree for every person on the planet.
UNEP executive director Achim Steiner said at U.N. headquarters that the target was revised after the campaign, started in 2006, doubled its original goal of planting one billion trees.
According to Topnews.in, Steiner said, "No one could have imagined it could have flowered so fast and so far."
About 155 countries are participating in the campaign with Africa accounting for over half of the two billion trees planted to date. Ethiopia leads the countries with the most number of trees planted at 700 million.
