Canada Reports First Case Of Salmonella Poisoning Linked To U.S. Outbreak

Windsor Genova - AHN News Writer

Toronto, Canada (AHN) - Canada reported Friday its first case of salmonella poisoning linked to the outbreak of the disease in the United States.

The Public Health Agency of Canada said a 33-year-old man from Ontario returning from the U.S. tested positive for the salmonella strain that has sickened 922 Americans in 40 U.S. states since April.

The agency did not give more details about the case and warned citizens traveling to the U.S. to be careful about tomatoes and salmonella.

U.S. health authorities investigating the salmonella outbreak suspect the disease was spread by contaminated tomatoes or other ingredients eaten with them in Mexican cooking and suspect that produce from Mexico is the culprit. They are embargoing such items imported from Mexico and testing them for salmonella and E.coli.
