Ottawa, Ontario (AHN) - As expected Etobicoke-Lakeshore MP Michael Ignatieff official declared on Thursday his availability to run in May as Liberal Party leader to replace Stephane Dion.
In a news conference, Ignatieff said, "I'm running because I love my country, because I love my party and because I believe I can offer the leadership this country needs in tough times."
Ignatieff emphasized the Liberal Party, which lost 19 parliament seats in the Oct. 14 snap federal election, needs change. Among the measures he intends to put in place if he wins the top post, will be to hold a policy conference within 100 days of his election as Liberal Party leader.
The party will hold its leadership convention from April 30 to May 3 next year in Vancouver. Among his opponents for the post are Toronto MP Bob Rae and New Brunswick MP Dominic LeBlanc.
Liberals who have said they do not intend to replace Dion were Ottawa South MP David McGuinty, Parkdale-High Park MP Gerard Kennedy and Willowdale MP Martha Hall Findlay.
