Hanoi, Vietnam (AHN) - A 32-year-old man became the second bird flu fatality in Vietnam this year after succumbing to the H5N1 virus on Wednesday, health officials said.
The victim died after battling the illness for two weeks at Hanoi's tropical diseases institute, the hospital's head, Nguyen Van Thai, said. The infection started after the man slaughtered and ate ducks his family raised in Ninh Binh, about 60 miles south of Hanoi.
Early this month, a 23-year-old woman died from avian influenza. Vietnam also saw the outbreak of avian influenza in 13 provinces this year forcing the government to kill more than 50,000 birds to prevent the spread of the disease.
Vietnam ranks second after Indonesia among countries with the highest number of bird flu deaths. The country now has a total 54 bird flu deaths since the disease broke out in Asia in 2003.
