Buckingham Palace Is Least Green Building In U.K.

AHN Staff

London, England (AHN) - A group of energy surveyors named Buckingham Palace as the least green building in the United Kingdom. The team gave it a zero score out of a maximum 10 points.

According to thermal imaging technology used by the team, which identified and measured energy wastage, heat pours through the closed curtain windows of the palace, its roof and cracks in the wall. The team called the palace the largest "central heating radiator".

Next to the palace, other government buildings were included in the dirty dozen of the team. On second place is the Department of Environment building. Other government edifices on the list are the Treasury, Ministry of Defense and the Portcullis House.

On the opposite end, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation tower block in Canary Wharf was named by the thermal survey team as the most energy efficient building in Britain.

Because of the leaks at Buckingham Palace, it spent $3 million (2.2 million pound) on utility bills in 2008. At least $44 million (32 million pound) is needed by the palace to repair the royal palace, according to the National Audit Office.
