Yangon, Myanmar (AHN) - Myanmar's military junta denied United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon to meet with democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi, the reports said on Saturday.
Ban revealed about the refusal to meet her during his second round of talks with Myanmar's military leader Gen. Than Shwe.
"The secretary-general believes that the sooner these issues are addressed, the earlier Myanmar will be able to move towards peace, democracy and prosperity," CNN quoted Michele Montas, Ban's spokeswoman, as saying earlier in the week.
Montas added, "He looks forward to meeting all key stakeholders to discuss what further assistance the United Nations can offer to that end."
Her arrest sparked series of criticism by the international community and human rights groups across the globe.
Suu Kyi has been under illegitimate house arrest for more than 13 of the 19 years since her party was overwhelmingly elected by the people of Burma to lead their country.
The U.S. and United Nations have condemned her trials as a trick by the ruling junta to keep the leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in detention until after 2010 elections.
The international community leaders have urged the Myanmar junta to release 63-year-old Suu Kyi.
Analysts are expecting the next year's elections to bring democracy in the nation
