Tehran, Iran (AHN) - Southern Iran was rocked by an earthquake early Wednesday morning. The quake struck Iran's Hormozgan province and according to state run media injured close to 700 people.
During the 4.9 magnitude quake that people fled their homes and flooded streets.
According to Iranian officials, the quake struck at 2:56 a.m. local time, and no deaths have been reported. Electricity and phone lines were knocked out but most have since been restored. Reports say homes and businesses also suffered moderate damage.
The same area in 2008 was the site of a 61.1 quake that toppled nearly 200 villages and killed six people. Because the fourth largest oil producing country is positioned has numerous seismic fault lines the region is no stranger to devastating earthquakes. In December 2003 a 6.6 magnitude quake devastated the ancient city of Bam in southeast Iran, killing at least 30,000 people.
