Jizan, Saudi Arabia (AHN) - Saudi air force jets continued bombing locations where Shiite rebels were hiding on Friday. The attacks have the potential to pull the world's largest oil exporter into a neighboring state's civil conflict.
The air assaults on the country's southwestern border with Yemen have been underway for three days.
According to an official statement, jets hit areas in the al-Malahid district of Saada province and targeted border villages as well. The presence of the Shiite Muslim rebels in Saudi Arabia was a violation of Saudi sovereignty, the government said. The statement went on to say that air strikes began at 10:00 am (0700 GMT) and were ongoing, but did not provide further details.
According to officials, the Saudi air force commenced concentrated air strikes on rebel locations at al-Dokhan mountain and on other targets within the region.
Rebel leaders have since reported that they captured an unspecified number of Saudi soldiers and seized their weapons and equipment.
On Thursday, Shiite rebels fighting Saudi troops in northwestern Yemen said Saudi air assaults killied numerous civilians. Yemen maintains that no Saudi planes have crossed into the country's airspace.
