Solution To Honduras Political Crisis Fails

Windsor Genova - AHN News Writer

Tegucigalpa, Honduras (AHN) - Ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya refused to form a unity government with interim leader Roberto Micheletti Friday causing the agreed solution to the country's leadership crisis to fail.

Zelaya did not provide the names of his choice ministers without first being reinstated to his post but Micheletti went ahead naming a new cabinet to run Honduras. Zelaya, who was ousted on June 28 by being flown out of the country in his pajamas, remains holed up at the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa.

The formation of the unity government was agreed upon by the two sides on Oct. 30. The unity government is supposed to run the country until the presidential elections this month has chosen a new leader.

Under the deal, the reinstatement of Zelaya was left to the decision of Congress. However, Zelaya insists that he be reinstated first before a new cabinet is chosen so there would be a leader to swear the new ministers in.
