Reddinger Expresses Concern Over Sale of Two Fire Trucks

CLEARFIELD - Clearfield Borough Council Member Barry Reddinger expressed concern again about the fire department’s decision to sell two of its engines at Thursday night’s regular borough council meeting.

Fire Engine No. 4 was sold to the Irvona Volunteer Fire Department for $10,501, while the Mahaffey Volunteer Fire Department received Fire Engine No. 2 for $8,000.

“I just think you’re shorting yourself with those two gone,” Reddinger said.

He asked Chief Brett Owens how the department would be able to respond to numerous fires.

“What happens if there is a fire in Curwensville,?” asked Reddinger, who said both Lawrence Township and Clearfield would get the call. “What happens if there is a fire in the borough? Who covers the borough?”

Owens said they faced a similar situation a couple of years ago.

“We have other departments on standby, and we’ll transfer some from another fire,” he said. “It gets handled.”

Reddinger said he had additional concerns, while problems could potentially arise with the other engine or ladder truck.

Owens said the department didn’t have the need for the two engines, as it doesn’t have the manpower to operate them.

At a special meeting two weeks ago, Deputy Chief Dave Graham said both Mahaffey and the Irvona Volunteer Fire Departments had an interest and need for the engines.

He said the department preferred to sell the engines locally instead of overseas. “We wanted to help those here.”
