WILLIAMSPORT - The Department of Environmental Protection has denied a municipal waste landfill permit application by PA Waste LLC for a site in Boggs Township, Clearfield County, according to Northcentral Regional Director Robert Yowell.
"DEP's detailed review of this application during the past 16 months has determined that PA Waste did not meet the requirements of Act 101 so the application must be denied," said Yowell, explaining that the law requires applicants to demonstrate the proposed landfill site is at least as suitable as alternative locations based on environmental and economic factors.
Based on this requirement, DEP requires an applicant to identify the sources and quantity of waste expected to be disposed at the facility and the current disposal locations for this waste. The applicant must then show that its proposed landfill site is at least as suitable as the current disposal locations for this waste.
The applicant must also examine alternative disposal facilities located between the source of the waste and the proposed landfill.
DEP determined that PA Waste did not prove how redirecting the expected waste to its proposed landfill would not contribute to an increase in environmental pollution.
PA Waste submitted a permit application to DEP for the Camp Hope Run municipal waste landfill in late September 2006. The company wanted to develop an 845-acre municipal waste landfill with 221 acres lined to accept an average of 5,000 tons per day for 25 years.
