Aug. 16 Clearfield-Jefferson Chapter American Red Cross Notes

CLEARFIELD - Early in July, Red Cross-trained lifeguards from Nebraska and Iowa came together at the Qwest Center in Omaha to guard Olympic hopefuls as they competed for a spot in the Olympics in Beijing. Despite the fact that the swimmers are among the nation's best, the two pools constructed especially for the Olympic trials do require lifeguards. Red Cross lifeguards were there. Traditional lifeguard duties were not part of the job de scri ption for the volunteers.

Whistles were not blown to discourage roughhousing and "No running" was never shouted from atop tall chairs. Instead, volunteer lifeguards sat discreetly in the front row of the stands keeping a watchful eye out for injuries that might have occurred in the pools. They were just honored to be there.

The American Red Cross is providing aid to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for people who were injured or displaced as a result of the conflict in Georgia. As the violence spreads beyond South Ossetia, the ICRC is hearing reports of an increasing number of civilian casualties.

With many people injured and many more fleeing their homes as a result of the conflict, medical and relief supplies are urgently needed. Initial support will go to help extend the relief work of the ICRC on the ground, while additional response options are evaluated.

There will be a Multiphasic Blood screening at the Clearfield Red Cross Office on September 13, 2008.
The blood screening covers thirty-five tests for a fee and other tests available are Prostate and Thyroid for an
additional fee. Free blood pressure and oximeter screening will also be available. We are taking appointments by
calling 765-5516 Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration deadline is noon on Tuesday, September 9, 2008.
