Mt. Nittany Expressway to be Dedicated Friday to Tom Larsen

CLEARFIELD – The Mt Nittany Expressway in College and Patton Townships will be re-named for Dr. Tom Larson during a dedication ceremony this Sept. 12. The ceremony will be held in the auditorium of the Centre County Visitors Center on East Park Avenue in State College, beginning at 2 p.m.

In June 2008, the Pennsylvania Senate passed Senate Bill 999, naming a portion of U.S. Route 322 near State College as the Thomas D. Larson Memorial Highway. The legislation was sponsored by Pennsylvania State Senator Jake Corman and was signed into law (Act 60 of 2007) by Gov. Edward G. Rendell in late June.

As part of Friday’s dedication, Larson family members will unveil a replica of the roadway sign. Following the formal ceremony, PennDOT crews will unveil the actual roadway signs along the expressway.

Larson was deeply regarded across the commonwealth as the driving force behind a renewed, re-focused and respected Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. His tenure as PennDOT Secretary led to further service as Federal Highway Administrator. Many of Larson’s contemporary’s are expected at Friday’s ceremony and the public is welcome to attend.

Questions about the event can be directed to PennDOT Community Relations Coordinator Marla Fannin at 814-765-0423.
