Fatal Accident Claims Karthaus Woman's Life

(GantDaily Graphic)

COVINGTON TOWNSHIP – A single vehicle accident claimed the life of a 67-year-old Karthaus woman at 12:25 p.m. Sunday along state Route 879 in Covington Township, Clearfield County.

Police indicated that the operator, Sherry Chesney, 67 of Karthaus, was pronounced dead at the scene. They stated that the passenger, Alfred Chesney, Jr., 70 of Karthaus, was flown to the Altoona Hospital for treatment of “major injuries.”

According to the report, the Chesney vehicle was traveling west on SR 879. Police said that for unknown reasons, the passenger side tires went off the north berm of the roadway. They stated that Chesney was able to bring her vehicle back onto the roadway for a short distance, before the passenger side tires traveled off the north berm again.

Police stated when she attempted to return to the roadway again, Chesney’s vehicle traveled across both lanes of SR 879 and off the south berm. They stated that her vehicle continued south before impacting a large tree.

Police stated that Chesney was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident. They stated it was unknown if her passenger’s safety belt was in use.

Police were assisted at the scene by the Karthaus Volunteer Fire Department, Karthaus Ambulance, the Morris Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Moshannon Valley Emergency Medical Services.
