Bisons Shock IV with 2 Late ScoresHYDE — The Clearfield Area High School football team knew it would be
tough to top last week's thrilling come-from-behind win at Brookville.
Somehow, someway, the Bisons did exactly that.
Clearfield came from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to shock
Indian Valley, 38-35, on another rainy Friday night at the Bison
Sports Complex.
It appeared as if Clearfield (2-1 overall) would lose its second game
at home before Isiah Morgan scored on a 5-yard burst with 1:22 to play
in the game to push the Bisons past the Warriors.
Indian Valley (1-2) got the ball back with a little over a minute to
play and began driving, but Jarrin Campman intercepted a pass to
preserve the Bison win — or so it seemed.
A late hit on IV quarterback William Goss kept the drive alive and the
Warriors would have taken the lead had halfback Dennis Hockenberry not
dropped a perfect pass from Goss with 28 seconds left in the game.
Following the crucial drop, the Bisons got a clutch interception from
Tyler Kirkwood to seal the victory with 13 ticks left in the contest.
It was a wild affair, that's for sure.
The similarities to last week's thriller at Brookville were eerie.
In that game, Clearfield trailed, 35-24, but scored two fourth-quarter
touchdowns to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. In this one,
Clearfield trailed, 35-25, and again scored two late TDs to pull out
the win.
There were plenty of stars for the Bisons on this night.
Morgan, who is getting better and better each week, carried the ball
27 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns, both in the fourth quarter
and both from 5 yards out.
Senior kicker Kyle Kline booted a 22-yard field goal in the first
quarter that staked the Bisons to a 3-0 lead — his second field goal
in as many tries this season. Although he hit the crossbar on the
Bisons' final score, he had a solid night on PATs, connecting on
3-of-4.
But the No. 1 star of the game was without a doubt senior quarterback
Andrew Janocko, who rallied the squad when it appeared that all hope
was lost.
Janocko scored three times in the game, all rushing TDs. The first
came from 4 yards out in the second quarter. The other two were 1-yard
sneaks in the third and fourth quarters.
Although he was sacked four times and intercepted once, he was nearly
flawless down the stretch as the Bisons put up 20 fourth-quarter
points. At one point, he completed 10 consecutive passes and was
14-of-18 in the second half.
He finished the night 20-of-26 for 203 yards and the aforementioned
three rushing touchdowns.
His favorite target continues to be tight end Adam Jury, who caught 13
balls for 144 yards. Jury also completed another pass — his second in
two weeks — this one for 35 yards on a gadget play to Doug Kephart.
Defensively, the Bisons continue to struggle when it comes to giving
up the big play. IV fullback Nam Shartzer scored on a 60-yard jaunt
and Goss broke free for a 25-yard score.
The Bisons gave up 56 points in Week One and have surrendered 35 in
Week Two and Week Three, respectively.
Clearfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Kline's field goal. However,
the Warriors answered when Shartzer scored his first TD of the night,
a 2-yard score. The extra point failed, though, and the Warriors held
a 6-3 edge at the end of the first quarter.
Goss gave IV a 14-3 lead when he scored from 25 yards out. The
two-point conversion was good.
Janocko, though, scored with 4:21 left in the half and a two-point
conversion pulled the Bisons within 14-11 at the intermission.
In the third quarter, Clearfield got its second lead of the game when
Janocko scored from a yard out to make it 18-14. But Shartzer broke
off the 60-yard run just 16 seconds later to give IV a 21-18 edge.
Shartzer scored his third TD of the night with 1:29 to play in the
third to make it 27-18 — a two-possession game.
Clearfield got close again when Janocko scored his third and final TD
of the evening with 10:31 left in the game. That made it 27-25.
But IV's Skylar Romig bolted in from 12 yards out and the Warrior lead
swelled to 35-25 with 7:58 to go.
But the Bisons dug deep into their bag of tricks — again — as Jury
hooked up with Kephart for a 35-yard pickup. Morgan capped the
four-play, 65-yard drive with a 5-yard TD.
The Bisons then went 91 yards for the game-winning drive. Janocko
completed 6-of-8 on the drive, which was again capped by another
Morgan 5-yard run.
TWO-MINUTE DRILL: Clearfield will be home again next week, when
Bellefonte visits the Bison Sports Complex. ... Clearfield had 20
first downs in the game, Indian Valley had 11. ... Indian Valley was
flagged 12 times for 70 yards. ... The Bisons picked off Goss twice in
the game.
