Campus Corner: Kyler Goes 4-0 at Lone Star Duals; Pataky Logs Two Wins

WRESTLING

ARLINGTON, Tex. - Nationally-ranked Army junior All-American Matt Kyler of Clearfield registered three falls and a decision at the Lone Star Duals in the South Prairie High School Coliseum Saturday.

The Cadets, now 5-3-1, beat Appalachian State 29-10 and Stanford 31-13 and lost to No. 7 Minnesota 26-15 and North Carolina 23-12.

Kyler pinned Appalachian State's Chip Powell in 1:21, Minnesota's Brian Peterson in 3:38 and Stanford's Max Rosefigura in 1:50 at 149 pounds before moving up to 157 to defeat North Carolina's Thomas Scotton 5-1.

In dual-meet action, Kyler is 9-0 with six falls and a major decision. He's 19-4 for the season.

Kyler went into the new year ranked No. 9 at 149 by Amateur Wrestling News and Wrestling Insider Magazine and No. 13 in the USA Today/InterMat/National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Brad Pataky of Clearfield picked up two victories but No. 16-ranked Penn State didn't fare as well against intra-state rivals in front of 3,575 Rec Hall fans Sunday afternoon, losing 17-16 to No. 9 Lehigh after thumping Lock Haven 36-3.

Pataky took down Lock Haven's Nick Hyatt 17 seconds into their match and put the Bald Eagle on his back for three points and a 5-0 lead. Hyatt was injured when the Nittany Lion bantam attempted another turnover and had to default at 2:32.

Pataky got off to an even faster start against Lehigh's John McDonald with the first of his two takedowns in the first period. He widened his lead to 8-1 with a reversal and a near fall in the second period.

Two near falls and a late stalling point in the third period plus a point for riding time gave Pataky a 15-1 major decision as he just missed what would have been a crucial technical fall for the 4-3 Nittany Lions against the undefeated Engineers (12-0).

Pataky is 15-4 with an eight-bout winning streak. He's 6-1 in dual meets.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Tom Barger of Clearfield split his two bouts as Lycoming, ranked No. 25 in NCAA Division III, swept its two matches in the annual Pennsylvania/New York duals at Rochester Institute of Technology Saturday.

The sophomore 141-pounder lost 8-2 to SUNY-Oswego's Derrick Smith and nipped RIT's Adam Hugunine 9-8 to set his dual-meet record at 4-3. He is 6-5 overall.

Barger's win against Hugunine narrowed RIT's lead to 8-6 and ignited a seven-bout sweep by the 7-2 Warriors.

They pulled away from RIT 32-8 after defeating Oswego 33-10.
