Lady Bisons Defeat Lady Crusaders 13-3

ST. MARYS - Clearfield erased a 3-1 deficit with three runs in the third inning and went on to defeat Elk County Catholic 13-3 in five innings in high school girls softball action Friday afternoon.

Five Lady Bisons had multiple hits, Ashley Lias leading the 12-hit attack with a double and two singles. Alanna Luzier, Mandy Rowles, Sara Kovalick and Megan Butler each had two hits, including a triple by Luzier and a double by Rowles.

Rowles hurled a five-hitter and struck out five for her second win in four decisions

Doubles by Rowles and Lias gave coach Bob Dixon's Lady Bisons (4-2) a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Lady Crusaders (4-2) answered with all of their runs on three hits. Mary Kate Minnick had a two-run single and scored on Casey Reed's single.

Clearfield quickly knotted the count on Kenzi McGovern's walk, Luzier's triple and Brittany Pataky's sacrifice fly. Then Collins clubbed a triple to deep center and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, the Lady Bisons expanded the lead to 7-4 on hits by Lias, Kovalick, Butler and Luzier, and another sacrifice fly by Pataky.

Clearfield brought the 10-run Mercy Rule into play with a six-run outburst in the fifth. Kovalick delivered a two-run single and McGovern picked up a run-batted-in with a grounder. An ECC outfield error gave the Lady Bisons two more runs, and Luzier stole home for the final tally.

The Lady Bisons will play in the Philipsburg-Osceola Tournament today, with the first game at 10 a.m. They will host DuBois Central Catholic Tuesday.

Clearfield's home game against Bald Eagle Area, postponed for the second time Wednesday, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 9.
