PHILIPSBURG - The Mountaineer Tournament wasn't a very pleasant experience for the Clearfield Area High School softball team Saturday.
The Lady Bisons were nipped 2-1 in nine innings by Northern Cambria and 3-2 by Hollidaysburg (5-7).
Philipsburg-Osceola (10-3) copped the championship by edging Hollidaysburg 2-1 behind Brittany Murphy's three-hit pitching and downing Northern Cambria (8-4) 13-2 in five innings as Taylor Harpster cracked three doubles and drove in four runs and Chasity Myers rapped three singles.
In the tourney opener against Northern Cambria, Clearfield grabbed a 1-0 lead on a double by Nikki Collins and a single by Mandy Rowles with two outs in the first inning.
However, coach Bob Dixon's Lady Bisons couldn't come up with a clutch hit over the next eight frames and wound up stranding 10 runners. Eight different players had hits off winner Carrie Shevock, who struck out eight.
Rowles, who also worked nine innings, was the tough-luck loser. She allowed only three hits until the ninth, when the winners doubled their total to produce the deciding run after Rowles notched her seventh and eight strikeouts. Rebecca Petrisko doubled and scored on a single by Courtney Zernick.
Northern Cambria had tied the game in the sixth on Julie Paronish's double after Jennifer Churner struck out but reached base on a passed ball.
Against Hollidaysburg, Clearfield had to play catch-up after Lady Tiger Taylor Griffith belted a three-run homer in the third inning.
The Lady Bisons got one run back in the fifth on Kenzie McGovern's single, an error and Alanna Luzier's single and made it close in the seventh when Brittany Pataky doubled to score McGovern, who was aboard on a forceout. Pataky was cut down at third base to end the game.
Luzier and Pataky had a single and double apiece.
Rowles, who pitched 20 innings in two days, took the loss.
Clearfield (4-4) will try to get back on the winning trail Monday at home against DuBois Central Catholic. The Lady Bisons will go to Brookville Tuesday for the makeup of the April 12 postponement.
