GOP Enlists Cheney To Prevent A Third Straight Loss In Special Election

Kris Alingod - AHN News Writer

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Vice President Dick Cheney went on the campaign trail on Monday to stump for Republicans in the runoff election for Mississippi's 1st congressional district.

The GOP is facing a tough challenge from Prentiss County Chancery Court Clerk Travis Childers, who forced a runoff in last month's special election against Republican Southaven Mayor Greg Davis for the vacated seat of Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS).

"What we need in Washington is a strong conservative congressman from Mississippi, not another Democrat going to bat for Nancy Pelosi," Cheney is quoted by the Washington Post as saying during a rally at the DeSoto Civic Center, Mississippi.

"We need Greg Davis to make tax cuts permanent and a Republican president to sign them into law," he also said, according to WREG.

A win for Childers, a conservative Democrat who is "pro-gun and pro-life," in the runoff elections on Tuesday would give Democrats their third victory in a special election this year.

Democrat Bill Foster, a physicist with a doctorate from Harvard University, won against Jim Oberweis, a millionaire dairy businessman, in the special election for or the congressional seat vacated by former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert held in March. And earlier this month, former State Rep. Don Cazayoux defeated Republican candidate Woody Jenkins in the contest for Louisiana's 6th congressional district.
