Atlanta, GA (AHN) - Former President Bill Clinton will be returning to the trail to help Democrat Jim Martin campaign ahead of a runoff against Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) next month.
Clinton will headline a rally in Atlanta on Wednesday, Martin's campaign has announced. "I am honored to have President Clinton join me in Georgia once again and proud to have the support of such a tireless advocate for the middle class. President Clinton and I share a common goal of helping President-elect Obama fix our economy and get our country working for middle class Georgians again," the Democrat said in a statement.
President-elect Barack Obama has also sent aides, "ground team" members and "online specialists and bloggers" to assist Martin's campaign, the Huffington Post has reported.
Obama lost Georgia to McCain, 47 percent to 52 percent, on election day, making Clinton the last Democrat to win the state.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) stumped for Chambliss last week, asking voters during a "victory rally" last Thursday in Atlanta to support the lawmaker. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee joined Chambliss, a first-term senator who served eight years as congressman, on Sunday in Duluth for a "fair tax rally."
Results from all precincts in the state's 159 counties were certified by Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel last Thursday, when a runoff was officially announced for Dec. 2. Chambliss led with 49.8 percent, or 1,867,090 votes, while Martin trailed with 46.8 percent, or 1,757,419 votes. State law requires that if no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates will face off again.
