Quebec City, Quebec (AHN) - A new study by the Environics Research Group showed that despite the high acceptance of legalized euthanasia among Canadians, some still have reservations about mercy killing. According to the group's latest survey, 61 percent of Canadians favor euthanasia, while among Quebecers approval is at 75 percent.
However, 45 percent of those who said they strongly support euthanasia are worried the practice's legalization would result in people being put to death even against their wishes. Instead of legalizing the termination of life, those who have reservations about euthanasia want more government priority and investment on palliative and hospice care.
The Environics survey result is timely since Bill C-384, which seeks legalization of mercy killing for those in physical or mental distress, will go through second reading in Canada's House of Commons.
A similar survey made by Environics last year said 44 percent of over 2,000 poll participants favor palliative care and 44 percent euthanasia. Support for palliative care reached 50 percent in the Prairies and 47 percent among female respondents. Support for euthanasia peaked at 49 percent in Quebec and 48 percent among men.
